One of the barns getting ready for racing is that of trainer Dallas Keen, who has brought most of this stable from his base in Texas.
wife, Donna, are eager to run their horses at the seaside racetrack not only for the beautiful locale, but due to Del Mar's bonus program, 'Ship and Win'.
The Ship and Win program was instituted last year, to great success.
The program awards bonus money to runners that made their previous start in another state.
Those horses were eligible for a $1,000 bonus and another 20 percent increase in earnings in non-stakes races.
This year, Del Mar has increased the bonus money to 25 percent.
In 2011, Keen
shipped 10 to 12 horses in; this year, he
"We've been ready to come back here since we left last year," Keen
"We've been gearing up since the first of the year.
Everything we did in training or claiming, we were trying to aim it toward Del Mar."
"We got rid of the horses that we knew wouldn't work here," said Keen
, who will race in his
sixth meeting overall at Del Mar. "We came with everything ready to run.
