A painter of the contemporary landscape, Dale Laitinen takes his cue from the topography. His highly designed paintings feature both these natural subjects and what he calls the "Engineered Landscape" where he explores the visual interaction of this natural landscape with dams, roads, canals, powerhouses, etc. His work extends from representational to the abstract. In some of his paintings one might find elements of both.
Dale graduated with a B.A. in Art from San Jose State University in 1975. After college he experienced life on the road, spending eight years as an independent trucker hauling freight across country. Having survived that he turned to painting full-time in 1985. He has lived most of his life in the Central Valley and foothills of California and currently lives and maintains his painting studio in Mountain Ranch, California. He is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, and Watercolor West.
Dale is a past juror of many national and regional exhibitions including Watercolor West, Western Federation, Utah Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Oregon, Red River Watermedia Show, Magnum Opus and many others. His work has been featured in books and periodicals, and two of his articles have been featured in the March and April 2015 issues of The Artist's Magazine. His videos, The Language of Landscape in watercolor and Landscape, are available at
