Brooklyn native (and former UK football player) Nick Englisis and his associates first approached Kentucky starters Ralph Beard, Alex Groza and Dale Barnstable in late 1948 and convinced the players to agree to $100 each to beat their upcoming opponent, St. Johns, by more than the point spread.
