"There are three basic give-aways about a non-typical symptom that should ring alarm bells," says Dr Dev Pahlajani, President of the Cardiological Society of India and a consultant at Bombay's Breach Candy Hospital.
Smokers, tobacco-chewers, diabetics, people over 50, and patients with high cholesterol, high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease should be especially alert to unusual symptoms, Dr Pahlajani
says."Many women and younger people are complacent," he
cites the case of a patient who got a painful tooth extracted, only to have his
left jaw ache whenever he
exercised.Ultimately, a stress test" revealed that he
was in imminent danger of a heart attack."
Pain in the arm or shoulder.
