Newswise - NEW YORK, April 6, 2012 - Lawrence Leichman, MD, and Cynthia Gail Leichman, MD, have been appointed faculty members of the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at NYU Langone Medical Center. Dr. Cynthia Gail Leichman will be a member of the Gastrointestinal Malignancies team. Dr. Leichman was the medical director for Clinical Research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Desert Regional Medical Center, Palm Springs, CA, prior to joining NYU Langone. She served as a member of the Governing Board of Desert Regional Medical Center and is a member of the Intergroup Rectal Cancer Task Force and a member of the National Cancer Institute's Task Force for Esophageal and Gastric Cancer. Dr. Leichman also received her MD from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Michigan. Lawrence Leichman, MD, and Cynthia Gail Leichman, MD, have been appointed faculty members of the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at NYU Langone Medical Center.

On October 24, medical oncologist and researcher Cynthia Gail Leichman, MD will present information on how a person's genetic makeup affects their risk for developing cancer and how this knowledge allows the most effective and personalized cancer treatments to be designed.
Our genes determine our inherited and environmental risks for developing cancer, as well as how we individually process and tolerate treatments for the disease. On Monday, October 24 at 6 p.m. at Gilda's Club Desert Cities, Cynthia Gail Leichman, MD, will present "Know Your Genes," a medical talk in which she will explain just how genetic information is rapidly moving modern medicine toward a new era where cancer treatments can actually be individualized according to a person's particular genetic profile. Dr. Leichman, of the Chrysalis at Breastlink Medical Group in Rancho Mirage, is a respected medical oncologist and cancer researcher who has been recognized annually over the past decade in "Best Doctors in America. She completed her medical education and post-graduate training at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Leichman subsequently became a member of the medical faculty at Wayne State, the University of Southern California, Roswell Park Cancer Center, and Albany Medical College, achieving the rank of Professor of Medicine during these years in academic medicine.
