Craig Aamodt, president of ITC, said rural areas like Stephenson County need to keep up with changing technology in order to stay competitive in the business world.A wireless network would be the least expensive, fastest and most flexible system for the county to pursue at this point, he said. A wireless network, Aamodt said, basically uses radio frequencies to deliver communications wherever they're needed without putting cable in the ground. The most obvious benefit of such a system is providing faster, more reliable Internet use for local businesses, government offices, schools, residents and other entities."It makes sense," Aamodt said."What we've seen in our practice is an increased movement for a county or multiple counties to consider working together and owning a network. You've got to have reliable communications and Internet access to have economic development. You'd better be thinking ahead."There are no cost estimates being discussed yet for the Stephenson County project and Aamodt said prices vary depending on the size of the project.
