Former Valley girl Corrie Aasen (nee Eisner) has been busy since she left home.
A graduated gemologist and owner of Heavy Metal Design in Winnipeg, Aasen has touched the lives of many individuals - customers she now calls friends - by doing what any sensible, level headed business person would never do - listen to her heart. The life and work she enjoys today never crossed her mind as a possibility when she first left home to attend Red River Community College in pursuit of a diploma in business. At the time, Aasen was doing the sensible thing by working towards what almost everyone would call a good career move, and was employed by Revenue Canada along with 27 other graduates in her class. "I hated it," Aasen recalled. "But, it was a good job." In 1990 a government job was the best kind of work available. With good wages, benefits, and holidays, Aasen was unhappy, but found it hard to quit - until 1994 when she discovered there was such a thing as a graduate gemology program. "I didn't know you could do that," said Aasen, whose love of all things sparkly began as a little girl, perusing the Sears catalogue with Christmas money in hand to buy jewelry.

"This is the first really big win in the city since we've been around," said Corrie Aasen, the owner of Heavy Metal Design, which opened in October 2006.
"They've got lots of compliments from the players, everybody was super happy with them." She started mailing out the rings about three weeks ago. "We didn't want to reveal any pictures or anything till everybody had them in their hands," Aasen said. "(But now) the word is out. I think he's still got a few here from guys who are in countries where (we) couldn't get them to them but other than that, everybody's got them on their hands." Each ring has 38 cubic zirconias, a mount of synthetic garnet, and plenty of embossed text - the player's name, number and position, Goldeyes and AA logos, and "6-and-0 sweep." "They're big rings," Aasen said. "This is the first really big win in the city since we've been around," said Corrie Aasen, the owner of Heavy Metal Design, which opened in October 2006.
