This is not the first occasion that Corobrik has been involved in such an initiative. Mike Ingram, Corobrik Director of Sales KZN and Border, said: "As part of the service Corobrik offered, we decided to run a special training for ten bricklayers who would be building at the airport. COROBRIK LAUNCHES AN APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAMME In January 2009 Corobrik launched its new apprenticeship training programme with the appointment of four apprentices. The programme was introduced due to the critical shortage of skilled artisans within South Africa. As part of our Social Responsibility Programme, it was decided that two of the apprentices should be recruited from within the company to give employees the opportunity of developing their careers whilst the other candidates would be recruited from the children of employees. The four successful candidates were chosen after they had successfully completed psychometric, literacy and numeric tests at the Denel Centre for Learning and Development. Corobrik are sponsoring the Apprentices theoretical training at the Denel Centre for Learning and Development which the Apprentices will be attending on a full time basis until the end of October 2009. On completion of their theoretical training they will be placed at Corobrik factories under the guidance of the engineering department where they will complete their practical training for a further two years. On the successful completion of both their theoretical and practical training, they will write their trade tests and if successful, will be appointed as artisans within Corobrik. Aaron joins Corobrik after having completed his NTC4 in the mechanical field. Through reducing greenhouse gas emissions at its Lawley factory, Corobrik, has become the first company in South Africa and in sub-Saharan Africa to be awarded carbon credits by the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism. Meyer emphasises that the driving force behind the decision to switch to natural gas firing was to further enhance the greening of Corobrik's business. Corobrik now has six of its bigger factories being fired on natural gas the last conversion being at Driefontein factory where Corobrik is preparing to apply for a CER's. Corobrik is set to continue along its path of investing in energy efficient and clean air technologies. "Corobrik fully endorses this perspective and we remain committed to providing quality products with reduced impact on the environment and greater social benefit". GREEN BUILDING CONVENTION Corobrik has made consistent progress over the years in greening its business such that our environmental practices better match the wonderful environmental integrity of our products. It was therefore appropriate for Corobrik as a member of the Green Building Council of South Africa to have an exhibit at the inaugural convention of the Green Building Council to launch the new Green Star rating system that provides a mechanism for design professionals to better design low energy usage and more environmentally friendly buildings. Peter Kidger, Allistair Cloete and Peter Max flew the flag for Corobrik at this well attended convention at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from Sunday 2 - 4 November 2008. If they can understand this, they will then know that Corobrik belongs to all the employees and not only to the Directors." "This will motivate them to work harder for their company. I would also like to see Corobrik growing from strength to strength which will in turn mean job security for employees, better quality lives for them and their families."
