Corey Abney, pastor of Florence Baptist Church at Mount Zion, one of Northern Kentucky's largest Baptist churches, told his congregation that he was watching the Supreme Court's blog the day the court handed down its marriage ruling. What he saw made his heart heavy. In a sermon preached the Sunday after the decision and posted on the church Web site, he told the congregation he was concerned at how many people calling themselves Christians were celebrating. "Now I'm definitely concerned that there will be many, many families, in the light of Friday's ruling, who will be devoured by their own sexual appetites and won't realize it till too late." For 45 minutes, Abney preached about the ruling and its implications, which he said would include polygamists arguing that the ruling made polygamy acceptable. It's a game-changing ruling on the order of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling which legalized abortion in 1973, he said. The Bible says God created marriage as a union between a man and a woman, he said, and human beings are not free to challenge that. "I will never officiate at a same sex union, and one will never be officiated in this room of our church. Never," he told the congregation, which applauded loudly for 20 seconds. Abney was on sabbatical this week and could not be reached for comment.
