Brown's appointment comes a week after Van Noord announced her intention to retire at the end of the school year.
Van Noord, who has served the district since 2000, was appointed superintendent three years ago. Van Noord was not at Thursday night's meeting, however, Connell read a statement from her in support of Brown. "Having been a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent, including experience working in two districts before her time in Palmyra, she, I know, is well prepared to take on this position," Van Noord wrote.

Dr. Collene Van Noord
PALMYRA - Palmyra's school board will be searching for a new superintendent. Collene Van Noord, 61, announced her intention to retire at the end of this school at the board's meeting Thursday night. "The decision was Collene's and Collene's alone. I wanted her to stay, but after she talked to her family, she felt it was best to retire at this point. She's going to be very sadly missed," he said. Palmyra school district Superintendent Collene Van Noord announced she plans to retire from the district at the end of this school year.

In a statement read at the end of the Curriculum Committee meeting, Van Noord said, "after much soul searching and family discussions, I have decided to retire from my position in Palmyra, effective June 30, and move on to the next phase of our lives."
The board gave her a standing ovation following her announcement. A native of Michigan, Van Noord has held the top position since June 2010, after being selected by the board following the retirement of former superintendent Larry Schmidt. Van Noord was appointed as assistant superintendent in July 2008, after receiving her superintendent's certificate. She earned her doctorate in education from Widener University in Harrisburg in 2007. She has been an educator for 40 years. She joined the district in 2002 as director of curriculum and instruction. Before coming to Palmyra, she was the director of curriculum, instruction and assessment for the Waverly Community Schools in Lansing, Mich. "It has been more than a decade since I was hired in Palmyra, a town I had not even heard of two months before that," she told the school board Thursday night. "It has been a wonderful experience for which I will always be grateful." She praised the school board, the administrative team, teachers and the community for their work and Van Noord said she has not decided exactly what she will do after she leaves the district, but "I still very much need to contribute to this profession and need to feel like I'm making a difference in my life. I'll see what kind of develops." Van Noord said she and her husband, who live in the Linglestown area, also plan to spend time with their two adult children and other family, all of whom live out of state. School Board President Chris Connell said Van Noord's decision was not a surprise to the board. Van Noord's contract with the district would have ended on June 30 had she not decided to retire. A native of Michigan, Van Noord, 61, has held the top position for three years and prior to that was assistant superintendent and director of curriculum and instruction. She was tapped by the board as superintendent following the retirement of Larry Schmidt. "It has been more than a decade since I was hired in Palmyra, a town I had not even heard of two months before that," she told the school board during its curriculum workshop Thursday night. "It has been a wonderful experience for which I will always be grateful." She praised both the school board, administrative team, teachers and the community for their work and support over the years. School Board President Chris Connell said Van Noord's decision was not a surprise to the board.
