The term supermoon is a bit of an exaggeration, however, because the phenomenon isnt particularly rare, said Colin Haig, vice-president of the Royal Canadian Astronomical Society of Canada.
Realistically, about every 13 months, basically the moon is back in the same closeness in its orbit, he explained. Because its a little closer, it looks fractionally bigger to us.
Star gazers who catch a glimpse of the moon as it comes up on the horizon may be treated to a spectacular view of a really big moon, but the image is just an illusion, Haig said.

This months supermoon will come closest to Earth around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Haig said.
