Clint Steele, vice president of marketing for Todd & Sargent, Ames, IA, points out that in today's fast-paced construction market, many owners are turning to design/build contracts to shorten their time from planning to project completion. Steele believes the keys to making any design/build fast-track construction project successful are timely decisions and good communications between the owner, contractor and suppliers.
The owner knows when he
needs to start up his
new facility, but then must make timely decisions during the project to allow ample time for all vendors to respond and build their equipment.
"The design/build approach allows for flexibility in decision making, but can place an extra burden on lead times," Steele
When selecting equipment, Steele
suggests looking for a company that has a knowledgeable sales staff and provides field support."We're looking for equipment manufacturers who will provide long-term relationships," says Steele
"One of the problems equipment manufacturers have with customers is that they don't report a problem because they think it's minor, but it's really major," says Steele
