During a news conference yesterday morning, Officer-in-Charge of the Armed Robbery Squad Assistant Superintendent Clayton Fernander told the media that a spate of armed robberies in eastern New Providence over the past month and a half has prompted police to go public with a warning.
, who was flanked by other senior officers from the recently created National Crime Prevention Office, said that the gunmen mainly target women entering their homes.
"We have noticed a trend in the eastern district of New Providence where females, upon arrival at home late in the evenings, are approached by men who would attack them and rob them at gunpoint of their personal items," said Fernander
"In the commission of these offenses, we note that vehicles that have been reported stolen are being used to commit these crimes," said Fernander
"What they are doing is stealing license plates and switching plates on these vehicles."
According to Fernander
, the vehicles of choice for the thieves are 1990s model Nissan Sentras and Honda Accords.
News of the armed robberies in the east comes weeks after police from the Cable Beach Police Station revealed that women in western New Providence were also being robbed at gunpoint outside their homes and businesses.
While police would not say if they believed the armed gunmen in the east are also behind the string of thefts in western New Providence, Fernander
insisted that investigators are close to cracking the cases.
"What we have done as a result of these armed robberies is beef up our patrols throughout New Providence.
We have also been doing a number of stop and search," he
