"Through the Lens," a photography exhibit featuring the photographs of area photographers Scott Fraker, Brent Golden, Marian Phillips and Clay Thurston, opened this month in Imagination Gallery at the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge.
Thurston, a wildlife and nature photographer, exhibits backyard bird photographs, along with other birds in his collection. Thurston began taking photos 30 years ago during outdoor activities he enjoyed - hiking, camping, and fishing. He has traveled twice to Africa, to Kenya and Tanzania, to the Galapagos Islands, and to most of the 50 states to take photographs outdoors. After he retired as physical education teacher at Robertsville Middle and Linden Elementary schools, he gave himself an assignment to begin a backyard photography project, building a blind and setting up feeders to attract birds, squirrels and chipmunks. Photos of his backyard birds will be featured in the exhibit. Thurston teaches photography at the Knoxville Arts and Fine Crafts Center and travels to arts and crafts shows.
