According to the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office, the investigation began July 23, when Spotsylvania detective Clay Blankenship was online posing as a 14-year-old girl in a chat room.
A man contacted the detective by instant message, and soon requested a nude picture of the girl. There were also a number of sexually explicit messages, the Sheriff's Office said. Blankenship continued chatting with the man for the next two months, trying to get him to travel to Spotsylvania to meet up with the supposed young girl. Meanwhile, Blankenship was contacted by authorities in numerous other jurisdictions who had had similar contact with the man.

Airman Adam Paul Closson, 33, was arrested Tuesday at Langley Air Force Base by Spotsylvania Detective Clay Blankenship.
He is charged with electronic solicitation of a minor and indecent liberties. Blankenship then took over the investigation and added the man as a friend in the chat room. The man began chatting with Blankenship, who he thought was a young girl, Timm said. He typed sexually explicit comments and offered webcam photos. Meanwhile, Blankenship had already sent an administrative subpoena to the man's Internet service provider. The information came back in January giving police his address in Hampton. With the assistance of military authorities, Timm said, Blankenship interviewed Closson Monday and took him into custody.

Col. Michael Timm said Detective Clay Blankenship was searching the Internet for child-pornography violators recently when he came upon a suspicious local Internet address.
Blankenship downloaded three files of illicit child pornography from the address, then got the subscriber's information from the Internet provider, Timm said. The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Mark Andrew Corpora of 6 Belmont Court in Woodlawn subdivision. With the assistance of the Stafford Sheriff's Office, Blankenship served a search warrant Monday and found Corpora in the basement playing a computer game. Four computers and several thumb drives were seized. Corpora was charged with three counts of distributing child pornography, and he was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. Timm said the three distribution charges are filed in Spotsylvania because that's where Blankenship was when he downloaded them.
