In 1985 Fr. Diaz returned to the mainland to join the Carmelite Order. He remained with the order until 1987.
In 1986 he went on to complete his undergraduate studies at the IONA College at New Rochelle, New York where he received a B.A. in Hispanic Studies and Literature.
From 1987-1991 Fr. Diaz worked as a professor at St. John's Military Academy in Washington, D.C. In 1991 he went on to teach at De La Salle Institute, a school for boys at the south side of Chicago.
He completed his studies as a priest at the Mundelein Seminary where he earned his Masters in Divinity, an S.T.B. (concentration in philosophy).
He was ordained a priest for the Archdioceses of Chicago on May 20 th, 2000. In 2001 the Chicago Tribune nominated 10 leaders in the Hispanic community and Fr. Diaz was nominated for his work as a religious leader and the only Puerto Rican priest in Chicago at that time. His nomination earned him recognition for his work with youth groups and faith formation for the clergy and lay people alike.
