Starr named new Chamber director
Claudia Starr Starting on Jan. 1, a key part of Starr's job will be to make sure others love her new home as much as she does. Starr has been named the new executive director of the Kingdom of Callaway Chamber of Commerce, and will take that position over from Nancy Lewis, who has led the chamber for 21 years. Starr, who said she has been part of several businesses and currently is the chair of the equestrian studies division at William Woods University - as an assistant professor she teaches courses in equine business, behavior and training - said she is looking forward to the challenge of helping promote Callaway and further develop its business community. I'm looking forward to meeting the leaders in the community," Starr said.

Claudia Starr
Claudia Starr Claudia Starr has over 40 years equine industry experience in international corporate and not-for-profit leadership. Starting as a nationally ranked show rider in show jumping, reining, pleasure and trail, to being recognized as one of America's first female Thoroughbred jockeys, Claudia has successfully worn many hats throughout her career. She is a leading management consultant and horse industry expert; having served as keynote speaker and expert panelist at horse industry conferences both in the US and overseas. Her marketing skills were honed on events like the Kentucky Derby where she served as Director of Community Relations, and successfully designed and implemented strategies in the startup years of the Breeders Cup as its first Director of Public Relations and Marketing. With a masters degree from the University of Louisville, Claudia has been an entrepreneur establishing an equestrian center and guest ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona, as well as launching international equine sports marketing products, opening new markets of distribution to the Middle East and SE Asia. In 2006 she was selected as the Director over His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar's, private breeding farm and spent nearly 5 years in the Middle East transitioning the organization to international standards under the operational umbrella of Qatar Foundation, a global higher education initiative with over 30 centers and branch campuses of six American Universities. She oversaw capital improvements for a new multi- million dollar equine centre with state-of-the-art vet clinic and international competition arena in Education City that encompasses 27 acres under air conditioned roof. As the country's first certified corporate compliance and ethics professional, she championed the cause for transparency in all equine endeavors. More recently she has served as Division Chair at William Woods University where she managed the equine studies program, served on the faculty and developed new curriculum for courses ranging from equine business to horse behavior and training.

"We just wanted to bring her in and share our wonderful county with her," said Chamber Director Claudia Starr.
"We're excited she can be here." For her part, Justus - who was first elected to the District 10 seat in 2006 - said she is looking forward to developing a better picture of some of her new constituents, although she has been a part-time resident of Callaway for some time. "It's just a coincidence, but I've actually been a property owner in Callaway County for six years," Justus said, noting she stays in her home just outside Holts Summit when the senate is in session.
