I had the opportunity to intern with Clara and MCCSN one summer.
This may have been the single best decision I have ever made when it came to my career. I am currently a Councilman for Anniston, and I used the skills I learned working for Clara Carter to run for this office. Clara provided me with expert wisdom on event management and I was able to learn all the tricks of the trade from her. Clara has a very great personality. She is your boss and your colleague with a great sense of humor at the same time. I had the big opportunity to learn a lot from her, as my boss and as a friend. Everyone should be happy to be her employee/intern. Thanks Clara! I had the honor of completing my internship under Clara Carter with MCCSN. Clara is a highly professional and electrifying individual who has helped me learn what it takes to create, maintain, and grow a business. She strives for nothing but more than the best with her clients and focuses on developing a highly skilled and knowledgeable worker with her interns. Clara Carter helped to build my confidence in my work environment and guided me in the direction of my career goals while genially being a humorous and charismatic mentor. Thank you Clara! Miss Clara Carter provided me with all the tools I needed to excel in a business environment. She introduced me to several outstanding people throughout my experience who taught me about success in this business industry. Clara is an intelligent business professional who has a motivating and energetic personality. She is also a poised and charismatic speaker/presenter. Clara also gives back to the community and to education whenever possible.

Clara Carter is a connecter extraordinaire and her MCCSN events are a great place to connect!
Great variety of venues, superb speakers and no-nonsense networking! Clara Carter has done exceptional work increasing diversity in organizations choosing to plan conventions in San Diego and abroad. As a result of my attending the MCCSN Multicultural FAM Tour in San Diego, The National Bar Association chose San Diego as its destination for our annual meeting with more than 1,000 to 1,900 delegates attending. Clara, thank you again for your services, we couldn't have done it without you!

CLARA CARTER is the president and founder of the Multi-Cultural Convention Services Network (MCCSN), Inc.
This San Diego-based destination/meeting management company is focused on global site selection and contract negotiations for groups and organizations seeking exciting destinations for meetings, conferences and conventions. A 20-year veteran of the Hospitality Industry, Carter has distinguished herself as the creator and producer of the nationally known Multicultural FAM tour. This tour is customized to give clients the unique view of a city by incorporating its exciting ethnic & cultural features. The FAM Tour was first launched in San Diego. In FY09/10, Carter was a successful bidder for funds earmarked for multicultural marketing by the San Diego Tourism Marketing District. MCCSN is the only independent meeting management company in San Diego County that has realized the importance of adhering to the needs of an often-underserved segment of the market, the ethnic conference and its attendees. Prior to establishing MCCSN, Carter, a native San Diegan, was employed at a major San Diego corporation. The experience with Corporate America prepared her well as she initially spread entrepreneurial wings with Creative Visions Meetings and Events. Carter is a much sought after speaker and industry expert on issues surrounding multicultural tourism and diversity.

Clara Carter, CEO MCCSN
Recently, I had the opportunity to chat by phone with Clara Carter, a charming (in her own words) self-taught entrepreneur. Clara is the President and Founder of Multi-Cultural Convention Services Network (MCCSN), a San Diego based destination management company. Her mission is to increase the city's share of the multi- cultural travel and tourism market. Before starting MCCSN, Carter worked for San Diego Gas and Electric Company for 21 years, at which point she decided to use her resources and knowledge of the city to work for herself. According to Carter, she observed an inconsistent outreach in bringing diverse groups to the City of San Diego and felt encouraged to do something about it. "The goal of the company was originally targeted at the African American market," she says. Since the company's original plans to market to African American meeting planners, MCCSN has since changed direction and now embraces audiences which not only target African Americans, but Asian and Hispanic cultures. She would love for these audiences to take full advantage of San Diego's thriving cultural Mecca, while ensuring inclusion of people of color in every aspect of the hospitality industry. Every September, MCCSN hosts its annual Familiar- ization Tour (FAM TOUR) in San Diego, which involves bringing together pre-qualified national meeting planners for a 3-day event to market what the city has to offer culturally. According to Carter, "It's a massive project which consists of planning, organizing and project management. It involves collaborating with anyone from industry partners, to the Mayor and down to the mom and pop businesses. Carter wants it known that there is more to offer in San Diego besides the Gaslamp District. "There are museums in Balboa Park and in Old Town, and there are various interesting communities, such as Market Creek Plaza," she says. In recognition of her hard work to promote diversity in tourism, just this past May in Louisville, KY, Carter was selected by Black Meetings & Tourism Magazine as the 2011 recipient of the APEX award for distinguished service. The prestigious award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the field of travel and tourism. Although Carter is originally from Louisiana, the wife, mother of two and grandmother of two calls San Diego her native, and we are proud to have her a part of our community.
