Director Christos Kanellakis of Alpha Tankers & Freighters, a prominent member of the Union of Greek Shipowners, said: 'International conventions must be upheld and the new EU directive clearly undermines MARPOL.
was speaking to around 500 shipowners and brokers at the Piraeus Yacht Club
during the Posidonia international shipping exhibition. 'It is time to take a stand against criminalisation,' he
said. 'Brussels' increasingly dictatorial style is counter-productive and out of step with the times.
This new directive is a disturbing example of what happens when constructive dialogue with industry is absent.'
Kanellakis went on to thank North of England for continuing to provide the 'highest-level support' to its Greek members, particularly since the opening of its Piraeus liaison office six years ago.

Club director Christos Kanellakis of Alpha Tankers said he recognised the need for the International Group clubs , including North of England , to increase premiums and cited several reasons for the recent sharp increase in P&I claims. These included the unprecedented length of the current freight market boom, the rapid growth of the world fleet , with more than 58 million GT being delivered this year alone, and increasing difficulty in recruiting and retaining high quality, professional seafarers. ,Undoubtedly the strain is beginning to tell and this is reflected in P&I claims experience,' he said.Kannellakis went on to commend North of England for its considerable efforts in assisting members with claims and loss prevention. ,The club's loss prevention programme is renowned as one of the best available to shipowners. That said, there is only so much clubs can do and responsibility for improving the position, raising standards and preventing claims lies with owners,' he said.,Now is the time for us to reinvest in the industry, not just in terms of increased wages but by investing in infrastructure, in our seafarers and in the future,' he said. ,It is also important we work together with a cohesive voice on industry matters as we strive to provide safe, high quality and pollution-free shipping.'
