Chris Vasko (Austria) joins the SGAC Vienna team for three months
ESPI ESA Chris Vasko has joined the Vienna SGAC office to produce the 2009 annual report and to support the SGAC office operations. See below for more information on Chris: Christopher Andrew Vasko was brought up bilingual and raised in both Vienna, Austria and Budapest, Hungary. After high school, he chose to study "Technical Physics" at the Vienna University of Technology, bringing him into contact with the topic of space research. During his six year masters course, he spent a year abroad in Madrid, Spain, as part of an International Exchange Program (ERASMUS) and became an active voluntary member of the Austrian Space Forum (ÖWF). As voluntary engineer, he participated in various projects such as a simulated mission to Mars using the Mars Desert Research Facilities in the United States. He also assisted in developing and constructing a remote controlled rover and a stratospheric balloon. In 2007, he participated in the ESA Summerschool Alpbach program where he was elected Team Leader and Head of Engineers and he led a team in designing a sample recovery mission to the Moon. The same year, he won the "Young Lunar Scientist Project" at the International Lunar Conference 2007. In 2008 and 2009, he worked as an intern with an Austrian company, developing a novel plasma engine for space applications and finally wrote his thesis on the impact of highly charged ions on surfaces at the Vienna University of Technology.

Former SGAC Chair, Contractor at ESA Strategy Department Christopher Vasko was born in Vienna, Austria. He studied Physics at the Vienna University of Technology, which brought him in contact with the topic of space and research from a scientific perspective. Ealry during his studies he became an active volunteer in local space organizations in a number of outreach/educational projects. His passion soon brought him to work as an intern at a small privately held Austrian company assisting in developing a novel plasma engine for space applications. Fueled by this experience, Christopher worked as intern at the European Space Policy Institute, the SGAC Vienna office and worked as scientific advisor for an international think-tank based in Germany. Christopher then decided to return to academia for a PhD in applied physics at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. This allowed him to focus on science as well as to remain active in SGAC where was active from 2009 on in various positions ranging from web editor to Treasurer and Chairperson of the organization. After defending his PhD, Christopher worked as an engineer before he started his current job at European Space Agency's Strategy Department in Paris.
