A former Douglass Middle School
teacher and coach has pleaded guilty in federal court to receiving child pornography.
Woodland resident Christopher Tomsett
, 44, taught seventh grade and coached boys soccer at Douglass.
Before being placed on administrative leave, he had been part of the Woodland district since 2002, starting at Woodland High School.
He was also a program coordinator for the School Community Violence Protection Program.
plea Monday and is scheduled to be sentenced Monday, July 11.
The maximum sentence is 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 and a lifetime period of supervised release with a minimum sentence of at least five years in prison and a five year term of supervised release.
During an undercover investigation into peer-to-peer file sharing March 2010, a police officer in Canada discovered Tomsett
had a large number of child pornography files, according to court documents.
In April 2010, a different police officer in a separate investigation in Kansas City, Mo., noticed the same files.
With this information, the FBI
issued a search warrant for Tomsett's Woodland home May 13, 2010, when he
According to court documents, federal agents seized a desktop computer, laptop computer and camera during their search.
admitted that he
had downloaded images of child pornography and had been doing so for about one year, according to court documents.
told authorities that he
first looked at child
pornography five years before.
Forensic examination showed that Tomsett
had nearly 12,000 files depicting the sexual exploitation of minors, including some of toddlers and featuring sadomasochistic conduct, according to court documents.
The former teacher has been in custody since his
arrest, although he
was going to be released on a $75,000 bond last May.
The bond order was reversed after FBI agents investigating the case discovered a series of sexually explicit emails between Tomsett
and three underage boys he
allegedly met on Craigslist.
allegedly posted ads in the Casual Encounters section of Craigslist seeking "a young boy toy to use and dominate," according to evidence filed in U.S. Eastern District Court.
There were 178 posts dating from January 2009 to April 2010, describing the type of partner Tomsett sought.
