Chris Van Dyke Chris moved here in 1975. "It was a very deliberate choice to come here," he says. "I grew up in the 1960s, and I liked the way [Portland]...addressed environmental and social issues. But I'm the freak in my family. Everybody else works in show business. I was the only one to graduate from college. Chris' first Portland job was as a law clerk for Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Arno Deneke, before Nike hired Chris as a lawyer in the early '80s. "I was a rebel in college," says Van Dyke, who studied at Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash. "I had the highest grade-point average for anyone who had been kicked out of school for bad behavior"-stuff like dismantling 100 bikes on the college lawn.

Recently, Chris Van Dyke, son of Dick Van Dyke, and a few co-workers thought of the new idea of online/offline shopping. A few months ago, a dapper, 57-year-old named Chris Van Dyke arrived at the Hilton Hotel in Portland, Ore., for the Venture Northwest conference, where he planned to pitch his new company, Nau. He carefully set up his booth only to see an attendee mistake the exhibit for a coat rack and proceed to hang up his coat. In a way, it shouldn't have come as a surprise: Nau is in the apparel business, while the conference was dominated by technology startups. Yet Van Dyke wasn't really as out of place as he might have felt. His Portland-based company aims to revolutionize retail by merging the brick-and-mortar and online shopping experiences. Since then, Van Dyke has worked in product management and marketing for Nike and Patagonia. The good news for Kajeet: all four guinea pigs, Christian, Derrick, Trent and Nick gave the phone service high marks.

The first to take the plunge was Chris Van Dyke, who had recently retired from Patagonia. "At companies like Nike, retrofitting for sustainability is like changing the wheelon a moving train," he says.
