The dA first took shape in the late 1970's when four artists, including dA president Chris Toovey, were hired to create a community arts program for the City of Pomona through the Comprehensive Educational Training Act.

Two kindred spirits we met back then, and loved right away, were Joanie Weldon and Chris Toovey.

IN OTHER Smogdance news, I dug my 1999 festival T-shirt out of my dresser to wear this year.The shirt was my reward for being Smogdance's (ahem) celebrity judge that year.
Still, last week in this space I bemoaned my shortsightedness in not buying a shirt from 1998, the festival's first year.
After some research, Toovey
gave me the good news: "We didn't have T-shirts that year.
