Chris Stegman, a member of Thurston Jail Alternatives, said he thinks a building the county purchased several years ago in Mottman Industrial Park could provide short-term relief for jail crowding.
"It's not the ideal long-term solution," he said, "but it would fix things so the county can begin planning a more realistic solution."
Thurston County Regional Justice Center bond issue: 16,048 in favor, or 38.54 percent; 25,597 opposed, or 61.46 percent.Failed.

"I don't think it's realistic in times of budget cuts on the federal level on down to the city level that we should expect the public to approve this on a second or third vote unless they can really accept it in terms of cost, No. 1," said Chris Stegman, a member of Thurston Jail Alternatives."The cost is very high.That's what voters aren't willing to bite off."
Stegman has suggested using the former Tyson Seafood manufacturing plant -- a building the county purchased in 1997 to house inmates -- to immediately ease crowding at the jail while officials work out details of a bigger proposal.
