STATE COLLEGE -- For years, builders such as Chris Schoonmaker
have had to tailor their construction plans to the laws of each local government. So, for Schoonmaker
, the arrival this month of Pennsylvania's first Uniform Construction Code will make life easier.
Starting Friday, all residential and commercial construction throughout Pennsylvania will be subject to the Uniform Construction Code, a set of regulations that covers everything from basement insulation to rooftop elevators. That's good news for Schoonmaker, regional manager for S&A Homes, one of the Centre Region's biggest builders.
Although many local communities already were working together under a central code administration, it will bring consistency to those neighboring townships that had no building code at all.
"I don't see how it can be anything but a good thing," Schoonmaker
What's worse, Schoonmaker
said, is that many builders, and even more homeowners, still are unaware of the new regulations.
"You tell somebody about it, and they're like, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.' And then all of a sudden, it's here," Schoonmaker
