Right now we can't talk of competing in the global market , said Chris Okpoko , an energy analyst with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group , the country's top private sector think-tank.He said the NLNG plant on southern Bonny Island was relatively new and Nigeria would have to reckon with competition from more established African rivals , Algeria and Libya. Our focus should be in the region. That's where our strength will lie for now , Okpoko said , citing a planned West Africa Gas Pipeline project led by ChevronTexaco to pipe Nigerian gas to West African consumers. The Bonny NLNG terminal which has loaded and exported 158 cargoes , 14 of them spot , since it came onstream in 1999 , made a breakthrough into the European spot market last month.NLNG officials said the company was the most reliable source of LNG from the Atlantic Basin and held the record in 2001 for the highest number of cargoes to Lake Charles , currently the only open access terminal in the United States.NLNG's General Manager Commercial , Jean-Francosi Capelle , said the company hoped to record similar performance with European spot sales and to be able to grasp further arbitrage opportunities between both sides of the Atlantic basin.
