The Army's Lieutenant Colonel Chris Hamilton has spent the past seven months working in East Timor with about 30 other ADF personnel providing specialist support to the East Timorese Defence Force (ETDF) under Australia's Defence Co-operation Program (DCP).
The DCP has been operating in East Timor since February 2001 to provide specifically tailored support to address the ongoing requirements of the ETDF so it can evolve into a highly credible, relevant and sustainable force.
With a number of nations providing similar assistance, Chris
is enjoying working in what is cultural melting pot.
"Some of the cultural differences do take some getting used to.In the western world we are ruled by watches, but here many of the East Timorese don't have watches," Chris
As for working with other nations, Chris
freely admits his
team is learning new ways to do things and that, "our way is not the only way". Chris
deployment as a "major highlight" of his
also notes that he
is by no means alone when it comes to gaining great satisfaction with the majority of his
staff requesting to extend their deployment. Chris
will return to Australia at the end of the year and looks forward to taking a well-earned holiday with his
