NewsChannel 9 WSYR meteorologist Chris Brandolino has spent 16 years on the air in Syracuse, including more than a decade at WSTM-TV (CNY Central's Channel 3). But on New Year's Eve, he'll say goodbye to Central New York and head for the southern hemisphere.
Brandolino has accepted a position as meteorologist and forecaster at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in Auckland, New Zealand.
"I needed a better work-life balance," he explained of the decision to move his family more than 8,500 miles away. "This is the best opportunity to kind of reach that goal. A lot of people don't know the hours that come with working for news, especially in morning news. It's pretty intrusive especially if you're a family man."
Brandolino will continue to co-host "Bridge Street" on weekdays and deliver weather forecasts on NewsChannel 9's "The Morning News" until December 31. To be on television in the early morning he wakes up at 1 a.m. and goes to sleep at 6 p.m., he said.
His new job is closer to a typical nine-to-five, with most days running from 8 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m. He says that'll give him a chance to see his children -- ages 2, 6 and 7 -- more often when they're not in school and spend time with his wife.
"There'll be times I'll need to work some more hours, but that's the exception, not the rule," Brandolino said.
Weather was not a motivation for the change, he added, despite Syracuse's famous winters. Snowfall in the mild city of Auckland is rare, as the average temperatures range from lows in the mid-40s during July and August (which is when winter occurs in New Zealand) to highs in the mid-70s during January and February.
Brandolino previously spent time in Australia, working at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology for two years. He came back to Syracuse in 2009 to work at NewsChannel 9.
What will he miss about living in Central New York this time around?
"I'll probably miss my friends and family but I'll be spending more time with my immediate family, so that's the trade-off," Brandolino said.

SYRACUSE - Even though Chris Brandolino announced his plans to leave NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) last month, one of his colleagues from the Storm Team has a surprise: she's going to beat him to the door by a couple of days.

Last month, current morning meteorologist Chris Brandolino announced his last day at channel 9 will be December 31. Citing a need for a better "life-work balance," Brandolino and his family are moving to New Zealand, where he'll be accepting a job with that nation's weather forecasting agency. He said the more-traditional hours at the new job will allow him to spend more time with his family.
