RTG chief executive officer Chipo Mutasa confirmed that 48 employees were axed last week in a company-initiated retrenchment exercise as Touch The Wild succumbed to the harsh economic environment at a time when tourist arrivals remained insignificant. "The prevailing downturn has not spared TTW operations. While the local market continues to support the division and major marketing initiatives have been put in place by the company, extending into the region, the TTW operations continue to be greatly compromised in terms of patronage. "It is for this reason that it has been found necessary to restructure the TTW operations through retrenchment," Mutasa said. Mutasa added that only TTW, which employs 102 workers, was laying off staff. RTG/Accor operates under four strategic business units - Rainbow Mercure Hotels, Sheraton Harare Towers, Touch the Wild and Safari and Tourism Services Zimbabwe. "The company will continue to closely monitor the developments at TTW.At the moment there are no plans for further job cuts, " Mutasa added.
