In addition, Cheryl Rodgers of Duke University Medical Center has received a grant of $98,528 for a research project that will explore symptoms, coping, hope, communication, and social support among 60 adolescent patients during their acute hematopoietic stem cell transplantation recovery period.
Adolescents undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation experience frequent and distressing symptoms, such as nausea, pain, fatigue, anorexia, and insomnia, according to a news release. There is limited information about symptom variations during acute HSCT recovery. Rodgers' research aims to help health care providers easily recognize and anticipate their patients' symptoms in the hopes of allowing for early symptom management interventions.
