Cheryl Poland
When Cheryl Poland was 7 years old, she discovered she had a talent and passion for drawing. When she was 11, she had her first nationally published drawing in "The Quarter Horse Journal" in 1967. Born in Selma, Alabama, Cheryl's mother was a portrait artist and her father an Air Force Pilot. She grew up traveling throughout the United States and Alaska at the different places her father was stationed. During the summers, Cheryl would visit her uncle's farm where she first began riding horses and fell in love. When she wasn't riding she was sketching horses and other animals, developing the signature style that marks Cheryl's work. She became a commissioned artist at 18 after entering the Stebbins Art Studio in Kemah, Texas. Her subject matter and unique style of art have been very marketable throughout the area but by the time she was 20 she had began working with a master sign painter Leo Sosa in Houston, Texas. Sosa taught her calligraphy, freehand lettering on cars, pin stripping, banners, logo design and Cheryl began to do murals on vehicles and buildings. Since then Cheryl has been working with oils painting horses, cowboys, portraits and wildlife. Her work has been featured at The Stebbins Art Gallery in Kemah, Texas, The Baker Arts Center in Liberal, Kansas, The Main Gallery in Ulysses, Kansas, The Arts Center on Main in Garden City, Kansas, The Hugoton Library Art Show in Hugoton, Kansas, as well as many other galleries and shows throughout the mid-west area. Cheryl is a member of "Oil Painters of America" (OPA), and an active member of both The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) and The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA).

Freelance / Commissioned Artist - Cheryl PolandAs an artist, Cheryl has illustrated for major magazines (Western Horseman, Horse & Rider, Dog Fancy Magazine and Cat Fancy Magazine) and continues to do commissioned artwork and freelance illustrations.Cheryl actively displayed and sold her oil paintings and pen & ink drawings at an Art Studio named Stebbins Art Studio in Galveston Texas up until the hurricane season wiped out the studio in 1989. Non-detoured by the hurricane incident, Cheryl continued working in various mediums and found that her specialty is Bic pen.You heard it right, Bic pen.To date, there is no one in this field of art work which makes her pieces a more unique class of its own.Since the early age of 11, Cheryl has studied animals with great interest placed in their different body structures and muscle types. The Art of Bic pen is to create different effects with the strokes of each individual line placed on the surface of various types and weights of paper in such a way as to create various depths of shading.Like Indian ink, Bic pen leaves no room for the artist to make mistakes; hers is a finely tuned and disciplined endeavor. The final outcome of a drawing in Bic pen is a flawless 2 or 3 dimensional drawing that shows great detail. While in Houston Texas, Cheryl studied under Leo Sosa the fine Art of Sign Painting, Lettering, Pin-Striping, Calligraphy, Logo design and Mural artwork.Cheryl believes in the education and distribution of information regarding the safety and protection of all animals living in the United States and focuses on the empowerment of horse owners and animal lovers of all ages and backgrounds. Cheryl was born in Selma Alabama and grew up in the United States. As a horse owner most of her life, Cheryl has spent many an hour in the saddle, in the arena, in the round pen and participating in showing horses and writing articles about her experiences.Cheryl's outdoor activities and love of ATVing in the country is what brings the life into her artwork. She is often amazed at the native wildlife indigenous to Kansas. She states that it isn't unusual to see an occasional Elk or Moose wondering the Kansas plains along with the various coyotes, bald eagles, hawks, owls and rabbits (just to name a few).Cheryl is an avid fisher woman and enjoys crappie, walleye and large mouth game fishing.Cheryl is an active member of The American Horse Council, The Kansas Horse Council, The American Saddlebred Association, The American Quarterhorse Association, The Arabian Horse Association, The Palomino Horse Breeders of America, The American Paint Horse Association and Ducks Unlimited.Cheryl will be showing her Art work June 29th through July 4th in Wichita Kansas at the Stars and Stripes Horse show in the Kansas Coliseum. She hopes to see all of you there.Cheryl PolandCheryl Poland If you are interested in purchasing any one of the items please contact Cheryl Poland at 620.544.7799
