This morning, Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy Cheryl Griffin, 42, was still in a coma, and officials planned the drive anticipating that she could need transfusions.
Griffin, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, was off duty when she slammed her 20-foot boat into a dock north of the Donald Ross Road bridge at about 4 p.m. Saturday, causing a boat on a dry lift to crash down on hers, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Griffin was pinned underwater by falling debris before being pulled by two men from a nearby home along Paradise Point Road, commission spokeswoman Gabriella Ferraro said.
...
Griffin was flown via Trauma Hawk to St. Mary's Medical Center, where her right arm, crushed in the crash, was amputated at the shoulder, officials said.
"Cheryl is in critical but stable condition and is surrounded by her immediate and extended family and continues to show minor signs of improvement, including responding to sounds of her family in the room," sheriff's Capt. Martin Bechtel said Monday.
...
Burdeen, the passenger, told investigators that Griffin struck a piling at the dock after over-correcting the boat's direction, according to an accident report.

The sheriff's office pledged to support Griffin and her family as she recovered.
The blood drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today and Wednesday at the sheriff's office main headquarters on Gun Club Road west of West Palm Beach. Friday, the blood drive will resume at 9 a.m. at the sheriff's district offices at 7894 Jog Road in suburban Boynton Beach.
Bechtel said it was too early to speculate about whether Griffin would be able to return to work.

Griffin, a former Royal Palm Beach police officer, joined the sheriff's office in 2006 when the agency took over the village's department. She worked in a district west of Boynton Beach, where she and nine other deputies on her squad recently were recognized for solving a string of burglaries.
She also was commended for her role in an attempted rescue of a man trapped in a car in a canal in July 2008. The man ultimately drowned, but Griffin and two other deputies were recognized for their actions.
