Four were firefighters, the fifth person was the female driver of the Honda, identified as Cheryl Bernard.
Bernard is a Shelby County jailer and was just getting off her shift at work when the accident happened. Bernard and a fire department lieutenant were taken to the Med, while the other three firefighters were transported to Methodist Central. Investigators say Ms. Bernard was traveling south on Ross Road just after eleven this morning. The driver of the fire truck swerved to miss Ms. Bernard's vehicle but hit the front of her car. The fire truck then veered off the road and into a ditch. Ms. Bernard was issued a traffic citation for failing to yield the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle. Cheryl Bernard was cited for failing to yield the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle. Engine 55 was responding to an automatic fire alarm call when the crash happened just before 11 a.m. Bernard was taken to the The Med in non-critical condition.
