Cherie Smothers, 19, said she never took school seriously.She went to four different schools while struggling to complete the ninth grade.When she returned to New Orleans a year after the storm, Smothers said she realized it was time to make a change in her life.Smothers signed up for NoPlay and passed the GED in September becoming the first member of her family to do so.She is now a member of the Americorps literacy program tutoring other NoPlay participants.

She was the first student to receive her equivalency diploma through our educational program. Cherie decided to stay involved with YEP after getting her GED and is excited to be giving back to other GED students as an AmeriCorps Member.

Cherie Smothers, Brittany Richard, Diego Perez and Tiffany Rodgers took and passed the GED exam in September 2007.
Cherie returned to NOPLAY as an Americorps instructor and has been employed in that position for the last four months. Following her stint as an Americorps service worker next year, Cherie hopes to pursue a college degree in psychology.
