Cheri Shannon
President & CEO
Cheri has more than 8 years of experience providing leadership to charter schools. Prior to this position, Cheri served as Principal and Superintendent of University Academy Charter School in Kansas City, a K-12 public charter school serving a predominantly low-income student population, she became well-aware of the challenges that charter school leaders face on a daily basis. More recently, she served as Executive Director of the Missouri Charter Public School Association, where she worked to tear down many roadblocks, such as funding inequities and opposition from traditional public schools, in an effort to ensure every student had access to the best possible education. While at the Association, she also effectively developed and implemented training programs for charter school leaders and created CharterStart - a quality development program that provides knowledge and technical assistance to charter petitioners.
Prior to immersing herself in the charter school world, Cheri held a number of different positions in education. She served as Associate Superintendent of the Kansas City Missouri School District where she provided leadership and supervision for the Curriculum and Instruction Department, supervised 36 principals K-12; authored the KCMSD Focus Schools Accountability Plan and the Accreditation Strategic Plan; provided monthly educational reports to the Board of Education; and developed and managed a $52.8 million budget.
She was also an elementary and middle school teacher for ten years before taking on roles such as Director of Curriculum and Director of Professional Development in the state of Missouri. She holds a PhD. in Educational Leadership from the University of Nebraska.
The experience and skillset that Cheri brings with her to the Alliance make her a valuable asset for families in Florida who are depending on access to the high quality public school of their choice and as well as to schools who are looking for guidance. She is dedicated to providing a unified voice, support and commitment to quality when it comes to charter schools in Florida.
On a personal note, Cheri has two grown daughters that she likes to keep in touch with when she's not in the office or on the road.
