Charlie Stillitano Sr. (Posthumous)
The late Charlie Stillitano played a significant role in the establishment of the sport of soccer in New Jersey. He dedicated himself completely to the advancement of this sport through maximum effort and exemplary actions. Born in Italy in 1929, Charlie began his soccer career at the tender age of 14. He was recruited by his hometown team (AC Gioiese), in which he played for several years, as his older brothers had done before him. Charlie played in the Gioiese until he was 18 years old, when his family immigrated to the United States. Charlie quickly acclimated himself to his new home. However, he continued to play soccer fervently. He played on many teams in both New Jersey and New York; among them were Colombia Soccer team, Calabria of New Rochelle, Inter Giuliana, Torino of the Bronx, Calabria of New Jersey and Roma Soccer Club. Charlie later managed Mamma Leone Soccer team and the Calabria Soccer team of New Jersey. After his soccer-playing career, Charlie dedicated himself to the Referee aspect of the game. Besides being a good referee for many years, he was also the president of the Referee Association of New Jersey as well as the Referee Assignor for the New Jersey Soccer Association. He was one of the founding directors of the Interstate Soccer league, a merger of the best teams in New Jersey and New York. In later years, Charlie was also the technical advisor for the Pingry School, a private elite Prep school. Charlie Stillitano served as the Executive Vice president of the New Jersey Soccer Association until his premature death in 1991.
