Stegall said Athens' bus system must be more convenient for riders, a view shared by Charlie Maddox, Athens native and seasoned community leader.
"Mass transit in Athens is poorly planned," Maddox said. "It is not work schedule-friendly, not shopping schedule-friendly." Maddox is a University alumnus and has served the people of Athens in numerous ways. He was founding director of Athens Neighborhood Health Center, served on the board of Commissioners of the Athens Housing Authority for 15 years and served as board chairman for the past seven years. He has also filled leadership roles in various local non-profit organizations. "I have the expertise," Maddox said. "I am committed to it. I've already spent the better part of my life serving the community, even when I wasn't getting paid for it." Maddox acknowledges University students' contributions to the Athens community, but said he would like to see more. "We need to encourage them to be a vital part of the community," he said. Maddox ran for mayor in the previous election cycle, losing in a run-off to incumbent Heidi Davison.

Charlie Maddox is running again for mayor of Athens-Clarke County in 2010, he officially announced Tuesday.
Maddox, 62, lost to Mayor Heidi Davison in a runoff in 2006. Maddox, a retired state Department of Labor official, said he has 35 years of experience recruiting businesses to Athens, and would be the county's chief industry recruiter if elected. His strategy, he said, will be to sell Athens' unique character to employers. "We don't have anybody out front being the face of Athens-Clarke County," he said. Encouraging businesses to move to or open in Athens also will grow the tax base and help officials avoid another property tax increase as government revenue continues to stagnate during the recession, Maddox said. The Athens-Clarke Commission approved a 0.15-mill hike in the property tax rate last year and a 0.25-mill hike is on the table this year, amounting to about $20 combined on a $150,000 home. Maddox serves as chairman of the Athens Housing Authority, as well as on the boards of several local nonprofits. Denson and Maddox both are moderates and Shinholser is relatively unknown, so at least one more well-known candidate from the left is likely to jump into the race. Maddox said he will reach out to the environmentalists and other progressive activists who shunned him in 2006. "We allowed ourselves to be painted into a box that we were not in," he said. "I have no problem with bike riders. I have no problem with Grow Green." He was referring to the Athens Grow Green Coalition, a local environmental group that endorsed Davison in 2006. Local elections are nonpartisan, but many liberals also were suspicious of Maddox in 2006 because he would not identify his party affiliation and had several Republican donors and advisers. Tuesday, he said he almost always votes Democratic but is not a member of the party and continues to count Republicans among his supporters. Maddox said he also expects higher turnout in 2010 than in 2006 because the recession and job losses are waking up voters, a trend he expects to benefit him. "We're certain we left votes on the table last (election)," he said. Comment on "Another run for Maddox" Charlie Maddox is running again for mayor of Athens-Clarke County in 2010, he officially announced Tuesday.
