Dr. Charles Edward Toomey III, 65, orthodontist in Annapolis for 25 years
...Dr. Charles Edward Toomey III, a retired Annapolis orthodontist, died Thursday at Anne Arundel Medical Center of complications of scleroderma, an autoimmune condition.He
was 65 and lived in Annapolis.
During the 25 years he
practiced in Annapolis, his
office was frequently crowded with children and their parents.
There was nothing flashy about Charlie
didn't wear his
ego on his
cared about others' concerns more than his
Born in Baltimore, Dr. Toomey
was raised in Elkridge, where his
family owned a lumberyard and hardware store.He
spent many summers at Bay Ridge, a Chesapeake Bay beach resort south of Annapolis. He was a 1954 graduate of St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Va., and of Washington and Lee University, where he earned a science degree.
A member of the class of 1964 at University of Maryland School of Dentistry
served in the student senate for three years.
At graduation, his
teachers awarded him the Timothy O. Heatwole Chair, an award for "ethical standards, kindness and humanitarianism."
For several years, he
worked alongside his
uncle, Dr. Lewis Cole Toomey, who taught his
nephew the techniques of orthodontics at his
Silver Spring office.
