Dr. Charles Edward Toomey III, 65, orthodontist in Annapolis for 25 yearsDr. Charles Edward Toomey III, a retired Annapolis orthodontist, died Thursday at Anne Arundel Medical Center of complications of scleroderma, an autoimmune condition. He was 65 and lived in Annapolis. During the 25 years he practiced in Annapolis, his office was frequently crowded with children and their parents. There was nothing flashy about Charlie. He didn't wear his ego on his wrist. He cared about others' concerns more than his own." Born in Baltimore, Dr. Toomey was raised in Elkridge, where his family owned a lumberyard and hardware store. He spent many summers at Bay Ridge, a Chesapeake Bay beach resort south of Annapolis. He was a 1954 graduate of St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Va., and of Washington and Lee University, where he earned a science degree.A member of the class of 1964 at University of Maryland School of Dentistry, he served in the student senate for three years. At graduation, his teachers awarded him the Timothy O. Heatwole Chair, an award for "ethical standards, kindness and humanitarianism." For several years, he worked alongside his uncle, Dr. Lewis Cole Toomey, who taught his nephew the techniques of orthodontics at his Silver Spring office.
