Charles Halfpenny, CTO and Founder, Halfpenny Technologies, Inc.
"For successful clinical labs and pathology groups, 'connectivity' is now the core element of the lab informatics strategy," says Charles Halfpenny, CTO and Founder of Halfpenny Technologies, Inc.,. "It's essential that every laboratory be able to connect its LIS (laboratory information system) to all the players-including office-based physicians using EHRs, HIEs in their region, or health insurance plans." "Advances in information technology now give clinical labs and pathology groups new options for connecting their LISs to all the players in the healthcare continuum," noted Halfpenny. Charles Halfpenny is Chief Technology Officer and Founder of Halfpenny Technologies, Inc., which has provided clinical data integration for more than 12 years. He has more than 20 years of experience in developing CPOE, EMR and HIE solutions for hospitals and laboratories and served on the ASTM committee that created the E1238 Standard Specification for Transferring Clinical Observations Between Independent Computer Systems. In addition, he developed the first commercially available order-entry/results reporting application to use the ASTM E1238 standard, which was later incorporated into HL7. A frequent speaker at industry events on hospital connectivity to physician EMRs, Mr. Halfpenny pioneered computer-based medical records in 1987 with the creation of the award-winning Dr. Chart system.

Charles Halfpenny, chief technology officer for Blue Bell, Pa.-based Halfpenny Technologies, agrees that hospitals have many competing priorities, but said progress is continuing gradually.
"While some hospitals believe they can supply connectivity to affiliated and owned physicians, many look to outsource the establishment of connectivity to companies like us," he said.
