Charles C. Edwards, II, M.D.
Medical Director of the Maryland Spine Clinic at Mercy Hospital, received his education at Washington & Lee University, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude and Honors in Engineering. He attended the University of Maryland Medical School where he graduated with AOA honors.
Dr. Edwards completed his Orthopedic Surgical Residency at Emory University in Atlanta and received advanced training in the management of adult and pediatric spinal deformity at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Edwards' research interests include the management of nerve compression disorders in the cervical spine and the treatment of major spinal deformities in children and adults. Dr. Edwards brings special expertise in the areas of minimally invasive spine surgery and microscopic techniques. In addition, he has an extensive background in the treatment of both spinal deformity and complex degenerative conditions using state-of-the-art methods. He is a member of the esteemed Spinal Deformity Study Group and is currently the Section Editor for the Scoliosis and Spondylolisthesis sections of The Textbook of Spinal Surgery, 3rd Edition (in press).
Dr. Edwards has been the invited presenter of more than 45 scientific studies at national scientific meetings. He is an author of 32 research papers and textbook chapters. Research honors include the Best Clinical Paper at the European Cervical Spine Research Society Meeting. While a resident, Dr. Edwards received the Best Resident Research Award three consecutive years. He was awarded the Resident Research Award by the Georgia Orthopedic Society and the prestigious Clinical Orthopedic Society.

A new study shows spinal surgery may be the only true option. Therapy, braces and pain injections don't hold up long term for most. Still, the U.S. spends 860 billion bucks a year on these remedies.
"While we may try medicines and injections first, oftentimes we will move onto surgery because those other methods just are not making a difference for them," Dr. Edwards said.

Charles Edwards, M.D., Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Maryland, has joined the medical staff at Mercy Medical Center.Dr. Edwards is Director of The Maryland Spine Center in Baltimore County and has relocated the Center to 323 North Calvert Street on the Mercy campus in downtown Baltimore.
"I am proud to join the staff at Mercy which has earned national acclaim for its Center for Women's Health and Medicine and its Centers of Excellence in vascular surgery, colon-rectal cancer, diabetes, urology, and neurosurgery.I look forward to contributing to and growing Mercy's respected reputation in orthopedic surgery and research," Dr. Edwards said.
Dr. Edwards received his education at Duke University, the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Yale University for Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgery.He rose to tenured Professor at the University of Maryland.He has developed many new procedures to improve surgical results and conducted extensive clinical research, publishing more than 150 articles and chapters.Dr. Edwards holds 19 medical patents.
Spiro Antoniades, M.D., Dr. Edwards' partner and colleague from The Maryland Spine Center, has also joined Mercy's staff.
