Pittsburgh Marathon provides sense of community for ministry runners | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Charles Chapman, right, executive director of L.I.V.I.N.G Ministry, leads meet-and-greet activities during a marathon team dinner March 14 on the North Side.
Charlie Chapman, executive director of L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry, co-founded the nonprofit in 2002 as a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh. Like other ministries, his initial goal was to "fix" the homeless, Mr. Chapman said. But he soon realized that was the wrong approach for what he wanted to accomplish. Mr. Chapman said he believes the root cause of homelessness is broken relationships. When people have a home and a network of caring people, they will have more relationships in their lives. Without a caring community, it's tougher for people to make healthy decisions, he said. One of the main tenets of the ministry is outreach. Members of the non-profit make weekly trips to shelters and homeless camps to spend time with those who are working to get their lives back on track or are just trying to make it to the next day. By providing a social network, a home environment can be created that can inspire them to try to improve their situations, Mr. Chapman said. "Many times it's the relationship that will inspire hope and get people motivated to address some of the issues in their life," he said. Every year, Mr. Chapman said, marathoners ran past homeless people, while the homeless themselves wouldn't participate. Mr. Chapman wanted to change that. About 20 runners, consisting of homeless, formerly homeless, and people from the local community, ran for L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry in 2013. Last year, 73 people participated. This year, 92 runners split across six teams signed up. "We want to break down the stereotypes of, 'Well, here are homeless people over here, here are people who are not,' " Mr. Chapman said. "There's definitely different challenges, but our goal is to even the playing field," Mr. Chapman said. Mr. Chapman said the important thing is that people finish. "I think a general misnomer whenever we talk about people joining our team is, 'Well I can't run that far,' " he said. "She was so proud to finish, she gave her medal to her mother on Mother's Day," Mr. Chapman said.

"The four hours I spent with [Advocace] was probably the best four hours I [have] spent in organizational development in two years," says Charles Chapman of L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry.

Charles Chapman
In 7th grade, Charles Chapman went on his first mission's trip where he worked with the homeless. From that point on, God would continually work in his life to develop the skills and talents necessary to be able to minister to the homeless. After choosing Pitt over NYU, Charles was eager to get involved in some homeless ministry in the city. He attended Cornerstone Christian Fellowship at Pitt where he was involved in a bible study with Kyle Dague. He shared his unrelenting passion for the homeless with Kyle, and was told to keep praying, because something was going to happen. God was faithful, and didn't bring Charles to Pittsburgh for nothing! God was preparing something big for Charles. Because of this, him and Charles were not able to meet until Saturday nights. On that Saturday in November, Mike and Charles first entered the doors of Pleasant Valley Shelter. Mike knew this, and God was really pulling at his heart when he began to hear about what Mike and Charles where doing. In the early fall of 2003, Mike, Charles, and Mike were all sitting in a coffee shop one evening after having just been to the shelter and were wrestling together with what God wanted to do with the ministry. Zach also attended Cornerstone Christian Fellowship and got interested in the ministry by the reports that Mike, Mike and Charles brought each week. Through Charles, Mike, Mike and Zach, God had formed a solid foundation with Christ being the cornerstone, that has made a significant difference within the city of Pittsburgh.
