In November we were proud to celebrate Charleen Tachibana's induction as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the highest national honor a nurse leader can achieve.
Charleen is a Past President of the NWONE Board of Directors. Charleen Tachibana was inducted into the National Academy of Nursing on October 13, 2012. Please note the special recognition given to Charleen for this achievement, below. Charleen Tachibana is Inducted Into the American Academy of Nursing Charleen Tachibana, the Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Executive, and Hospital Administrator at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, WA, was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) on October 13, 2012. "It was a very humbling experience," Tachibana said, "it was amazing to hear the careers of some of these men and women and appreciate what they had done to change the lives of people. There are some amazing nurses around this world. I see nursing as having a higher purpose. [Nursing] is a calling to make a difference for patients, and my desire is to have the ability to change our healthcare system and make it a system that is safer and has higher quality; one that is constantly improving." According to Tachibana, this honor is more than just recognition; it is through the collaboration of this group of individuals that she may help improve her practice back in Seattle. "It is not just the recognition. It's that I get to continue my work at another level and at another venue. It's that I am joining another group of colleagues to transform healthcare, and it's having another group of colleagues that I can also expose myself to," she said Tachibana's career has included being on the board for the Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA) and NWONE, serving as the NWONE representative to WSHA, as well as serving as President to the Board of NWONE. After receiving this honor, Tachibana doesn't seem to be slowing down. She looks forward to continuing her education and bringing her new learning into her practice. This is what makes her transformational - she continues to look ahead for new ways to innovate and move forward in her practice.
