Charleen Tachibana, the Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Executive, and Hospital Administrator at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, WA, was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) on October 13, 2012.
"It was a very humbling experience," Tachibana
said, "it was amazing to hear the careers of some of these men and women and appreciate what they had done to change the lives of people.
There are some amazing nurses around this world.
I see nursing as having a higher purpose. [Nursing] is a calling to make a difference for patients, and my desire is to have the ability to change our healthcare system and make it a system that is safer and has higher quality; one that is constantly improving."
According to Tachibana
, this honor is more than just recognition; it is through the collaboration of this group of individuals that she
may help improve her
practice back in Seattle.
"It is not just the recognition.
It's that I get to continue my work at another level and at another venue.
It's that I am joining another group of colleagues to transform healthcare, and it's having another group of colleagues that I can also expose myself to," she
