It could be a challenge to fund that," said Celeste F. Heiser, executive director of the American Red Cross in Schuylkill and Northumberland counties.

About $1,500 is spent per family for emergency medication, shoes, clothes and food, and a five-day stay in a motel until they find a place to stay.
"Without the funding the United Way provides, there would be people without hope in Schuylkill County," she said.
"He (George Bailey) was an example of helping people in the community," Heiser said.
The United Way, Heiser said, provides 13 percent of the American Red Cross' budget."We wouldn't know where to make up that money," she said.
"If there was a blood shortage we may not have the ability to provide it," Heiser said.
With more than 150 community blood drives in the region each year, the ARC collects about 7,000 units of blood, which is used in area hospitals and clinics for surgeries, cancer patients, accident victims, newborns and others who need blood transfusions.
"These are life-saving services that saves lives," she said.
