Cees J.A. van Lede - Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Akzo Nobel N.V., Director since 2002
Cees J.A. van Lede is the former chairman of the board of management and chief executive officer of Akzo Nobel N.V., a Netherlands-based manufacturer and worldwide distributor of healthcare products, coatings and chemicals, until his retirement in 2003.
He was elected to the board of directors of Sara Lee Corporation in 2002.
Van Lede serves on the Audit Committee, Compensation and Employee Benefits Committee, Qualified Legal Compliance Committee and Corporate Governance, Nominating and Policy Committee.
Van Lede joined Akzo Nobel NV in 1991 as a member of its Board of Management.
He was appointed vice chairman of the Board of Management in 1992 and became chairman and chief executive of Akzo Nobel in 1994.
From 1984 to 1991, he served as chairman of the Federation of Netherlands Industry (VNO), and from 1991 to 1994 he was vice president of the Union of Industrial and Employersâ€™ Confederations of Europe (UNICE).
Prior to that, van Lede served as president and chief executive officer of Koninklijke Nederhorst Bouw BV
, a Netherlands-based construction company, from 1977 to 1980.
After Nederhorst was acquired by Hollandse Beton Groep (HBG) in 1982, van Lede served as a member of the board of the combined company from 1982 to 1984.
Van Lede was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company from 1969 to 1976, and worked out of their offices in The Netherlands, the United States, Belgium, France and Brazil.
He serves as the chairman of the Supervisory Board of Heineken N.V. and as a member of the Supervisory Board of Philips Electronics.
He is a non-executive director with Air France-KLM Holding and Air Liquide.
He also serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations.
Van Lede also is the chairman of the Board of the Directors of INSEAD (France), the well-known European business school.
Van Lede earned a degree in law from the University of Leiden, and a masterâ€™s of business administration degree from INSEAD, the Institute of Business Administration in Fontainebleau, France.

Fontainebleau, France and Singapore, 1 February 2008 - The Board of INSEAD has appointed Dr. Franz B. Humer, Chairman and Chief Executive of F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, as Chairman-elect of the Board to succeed Mr. Cees van Lede as of 1 July 2008.

...Mr. van Lede was CEO and chairman of Akzo Nobel NV, from 1994 until retiring from the post in June 2003.He continues at Akzo Nobel as a member of the supervisory board.Mr. van Lede has been chairman of the supervisory board of De Nederlandsche Bank, the Dutch Central Bank between 1993 and 2004.He is chairman of the board of directors of INSEAD. In addition to various non-profit organizations, he serves as a member of the supervisory boards of Heineken NV (Chairman), Sara Lee Corporation, Philips Electronics NV, L'Air Liquide, Reed Elsevier and Air France-KLM.He is a Commander in the Order of the Dutch Lion of the Netherlands and a Commander First Class of the Royal Order of the Polar Star of Sweden. Mr. van Lede studied law at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands and received his MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France in 1967.He started his career at Shell International Petroleum Company, and then moved to a consulting role at McKinsey & Company, working on projects in Europe, the US, and South America.After a seven-year stint with the strategy consulting company, Mr van Lede transferred into the construction industry, and became president of the board of management at Koninklijke Nederhorst Bouw B.V, later to be integrated into HBG where he became member of the Board.Since 1984 he served as chairman at the Federation of Dutch Industries (VNO) and was elected vice president of the Union of Industrial and Employer's Confederations of Europe (UNICE).He joined Akzo N.V. as a member of the Board of Management in 1991.
