The Rappahannock River has been the scene of 87 drownings since 1972, said Stafford County spokeswoman Cathy Vollbrecht.
With that grim statistic in mind, Fredericksburg and Stafford officials want people to know the risks and take proper precautions.
"We know people want to go there.
It's a landmark," Vollbrecht
"But there are hidden dangers."
and Micks noted that people can't see the debris that is underwater, the deep depressions along the bottom and rocks that can cause them to lose their footing.
