And it couldn't come at a better time, said Cathy Cortez, director of Health Start Coalition of Southwest Florida.Although the most recent enrollment window was January, rampant problems in registering families statewide caused 2,000 fewer local children to be covered by the Kidcare and Healthy Kids program in 2005 compared to the previous year. "I got calls from people who mailed in their renewal forms, but got letters saying they had been disenrolled because they couldn't find the paperwork in Tallahassee," Cortez said. Cortez said her organization now relies on volunteers to spread the word. "Relying on volunteers is great, but it's not the best situation," she said. Once the bill is signed into law, which St. Petery said Bush has agreed to do, getting local agencies back starting the registration process should be relatively quick.Cortez said the groups work very closely during open enrollment periods to get registration forms to as many qualified families as possible. "We would send out an e-mail blitz to get every worker at clinics and hospitals to grab every family to see if they could get coverage," she said.
