Cathy Goldschmidt, RN began teaching childbirth education classes at what is now Porter's Portage Hospital Campus."From there, my responsibilities grew as I became the Childbirth Education Coordinator for Porter, not only teaching classes but coordinating other instructors and the classes that were taught," she says.
...Ms. Goldschmidt summed up what being an educator at Porter means to her.
"What makes this role rewarding is that there are the many opportunities to provide education to participants who are experiencing one of the most joyous occasions in their lives, the birth of a child.I have also had the opportunity to expand the program to what it is today, based on the needs expressed by the community.We have gone from teaching the childbirth education series to including a full-day course, a refresher course, hypnobirthing, sibling classes, parenting classes, infant massage, breastfeeding and a support group for new parents."Ms. Goldschmidt
was recognized by the state of Indiana in 2006 as one of the recipients of Indiana's Child Safety Advocate Awards for her
outstanding dedication in forwarding the issues of child safety.

Cathy Goldschmidt, RN, BSN, CCE, PMHS Childbirth Education Coordinator, successfully completed Indiana University's Human Subjects Protection Test.As a result of Cathy's efforts, Porter Memorial was awarded a $500 grant by the university.

When Cathy Goldschmidt, RN, came to Porter to teach childbirth education in 1988, she had no idea she would make her career here.Nearly 19 years on the job, Ms. Goldschmidt says she still loves what she does and believes that education is a valuable tool in keeping people well.
"I think the education classes we provide here at Porter
promote a better outlook on living a healthier and better lifestyle," she
says."We try to provide meaningful health information, awareness about disease processes and how better to prepare for the changes that are going to happen in life."
One of 10 educators who spend their days - and many of their evenings - in the community teaching both groups and individuals on a multitude of health and wellness topics, from the basics of childbirth and the idiosyncrasies of a newborn to coping and living with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, Ms. Goldschmidt
is on the leading edge with what the health system offers the community both in terms of quantity as well as quality.
Porter County hospital adds compliance officer to top brass
In a presentation to the hospital board, Porter nurse educator Cathy Goldschmidt, Madge Whittacker of Porter County United Way and John Ryan of the Portage Police outlined the health system's acclaimed car seat inspection program.
