A report by Caroline Lakin of the Office of National Statistics entitled "The effects of Taxes and Benefits on household income 1999-200" provides an update on income distribution in the UK.It shows that for both non-retired households income inequality has continued to rise despite increases in benefits.Broadly speaking inequality increased during the 1980's reaching a peak in 1990, it reduced marginally in the mid 1990s and then showed a slow but consistent increase. This is a terribly technical subject and it depends which measure you take, but it seems that original incomes for the richest 20% of households are some 19 times those of the poorest 20%.After adjusting for benefits and direct taxes, which reduce the differential and indirect taxes, which tend to increase the differential and adjusting for household size and composition the differential falls to about 4:1.
