She'd gone a week before that to get her visa and everything was fine," Carole Adriaans of MusicaNoir said. The MusicaNoir theatre company, which launches The Passion of Winnie Friday night, was stunned in part because the human rights campaigner and AIDS activist had been in New York City just three weeks ago to receive an award for her efforts tackling the medical scourge in her native country. Hardy Jimbes, founder and president of the New York-based Save Africa Concert Foundation, said it was relatively easy to arrange the visit with U.S. officials. He sent a letter to the embassy in South Africa with information about the award his organization was bestowing on Madikizela-Mandela and the temporary visas were processed for the trip, which lasted from May 18 to 22."I don't understand why they would refuse a visa to her," Jimbes told the Star in a telephone interview after he was informed of Canada's decision.Prime Minister Stephen Harper declined a request to write a message of support for the show, Adriaans told the Star.

Carole Adriaans, MusicaNoir's spokesperson said: "We did everything we could to have her allowed into Canada but they refused." Both Shadd-Evelyn and Adriaans refused to comment on whether Winnie's daughter, Zinziswa, who was to accompany her here, was also denied a visa. But some reports said she and two assistants got visas.

"Ms. Madikizela-Mandela has been denied access by the federal government to enter Canada and will not be able to travel to Canada" to attend the event, said Carole Adriaans, director of the arts group MusicaNoir.Adriaans told AFP Madikizela-Mandela was "devastated" by the decision, having been in New York only two weeks ago to accept an award for her work with AIDS and the United Nations-affiliated Save Africa Concerts Foundation."A week ago, they went to the (Canadian) embassy and felt everything would be fine.Yesterday morning, I got a telephone call saying she was having visa problems and was denied entry into Canada," she said.Adriaans noted that Madikizela-Mandela's daughter and two security guards received visas and Canadian ministers had even praised Mandela in letters to organizers.

The controversial ex-wife of Nelson Mandela, an anti-apartheid hero and South Africa's first black president, was forced to cancel her trip at the last moment on Monday, said Carole Adriaans of MusicaNoir. "She was devastated," said Adriaans.Adriaans noted that Madikizela-Mandela was in New York just two weeks ago to receive an award for her charity work in South Africa. Adriaans did not know why the visa application was denied and efforts by the organization to have the situation addressed were unsuccessful.
