RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK -- Carol Sloan, a research toxicologist at RTI International, has been elected to serve as a member of the executive council of the American Society of Andrology.Sloan has been a member of the society for more than 25 years and is the first person without a medical or doctorate degree to be elected to the council.Sloan was elected to the 12-member council by the society's 775 international members and will serve a three-year term.The American Society of Andrology fosters a multidisciplinary approach to the study of male reproduction, and includes members from all over the world whose specialties include male reproduction, endocrinology, urology, anatomy, gynecology/obstetrics, biochemistry, animal science, molecular and cell biology, and reproductive technologies.At RTI, Sloan manages the laboratory of reproductive and endocrine toxicology and serves as a toxicology study director.Sloan is working on a variety of drug development projects including the development of male contraceptives as well as several studies evaluating the effects of chemical exposure on human reproduction.Sloan also serves as a lecturer at Duke University, where she teaches a seminar course on human sexuality.In addition to the American Society of Andrology, Sloan is a member of several other professional organizations including the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Society for the Study of Reproduction, and North Carolina Toxicology Society.

Vice-Chair, Director Carol Sloan has worked, taught, and published in the areas of endocrinology and reproductive biology for more than 40 years and has extensive experience with hormone assays andandrology evaluations. Carol also worked for more than 15 years in reproductive toxicology. She was the Director of the Trasnsgenic Facilities at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) for more than four years. For 16 years, Carol was the Director of Andrology and Human In Vitro Fertilization Laboratories in obstetrics/gynecology departments at UNC. In 1998, she joined the Laboratory of Reproductive and Endocrine Toxicology in the Center for Life Sciences and Toxicology at RTI International (RTI) as a Research Toxicologist. Until her retireent in 2014, Carol managed this laboratory, which performs an array of endocrine and reproductive toxicity testing procedures. Carol has been a Study Director on Adult Male and Hershberger studies for the American Chemistry Council and for more than five in vivo and in vitro studies for EPA's Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP), as a subcontractor to Battelle Memorial Laboratories. Carol has designed and supervised studies involving various routes of drug administration including intrauterine and blastocyst microinjection. And she has experience measuring study outcomes by various toxicological and teratological parameters, hormonal assays, and manual and automated sperm assessments. She most recently worked to validate testing methods and develop new in vitro testing procedures for animal and human reproductive and endocrine parameters for toxicology and risk assessment. Carol received her M.S. in physiology and biochemistry from Purdue University.
